It’s time for a serious post/rant.
Americans today have one major downfall. It is our socioeconomic mindset. We live in the here and now, and we don’t have the slightest bit of concern or knowledge about anything that goes on outside of the U.S. We are provincial, ignorant, intolerant human beings.
This series of posts spawned from my conversations after work tonight. I was speaking with two of my co-workers, one a gay male, and the other an immigrant from Indonesia. While talking to the former, the topics of homosexuality and anti-homosexuality were brought up.
We were speaking of the stereotypes that come with being gay, and what, culturally, makes a person “gay.” I, as well as my coworker, believe that many of the “gay” characteristics or tendencies that homosexual males have are a direct result of a mass social belief of how gay males act, not as a result of them being gay.
There are two sides to this statement. One, addressing the homosexual side, is that many gay males act a certain way -be it ultra-effeminate, very flashy clothing, or just making sure everyone in the room knows that they are, in fact, homosexual- because of the pressures and expectations that society has placed on them. He stated that many people that act this way are trying to prove that they are gay. He said that many must feel that if everyone they come in contact with must know that they are gay, or else they have “failed” at being gay. They feel this way because of the definition that the American gay society has aligned with being gay.
The other side is the complete opposite. The supra-masculine, truck driving, fishing, hunting homophobe that despises anything “gay.” The fag hating, super self-conscious males who flee from anything Glee. This is not necessarily a result of their own choice or prejudice, but of a much wider influence of the social definition of a man.
Both, while being completely different superficially, are very dangerous, and both have the same root cause. America’s definition of a man. Nowadays, males are so concerned with living up to the socioeconomic definition of a man, that they want to be so masculine that they are never perceived as being gay.
Man, as defined by Mirram-Webster online dictionary.
–noun
1.an adult male person, as distinguished from a boy or a woman.
2.a member of the species Homo sapiens or all the members of this species collectively, without regard to sex: prehistoric man.
3.the human individual as representing the species, without
reference to sex; the human race; humankind: Man hopes for
peace, but prepares for war.
4.a human being; person: to give a man a chance; When the
audience smelled the smoke, it was every man for himself.
5.a husband.
6.a male lover or sweetheart
None of these have anything to do with sexual preference. The problems are our nation’s mindset and the mindset of the gay community. Take a minute and challenge ignorance. Think for yourself.
The last time I actually went to a show and didn’t work at it.
On the plus side, I can’t remember the last time I payed for a show.
